A devastating bushfire in Geraldton, Western Australia, has left a trail of destruction, with two homes uninhabitable and one completely destroyed. The fire, which tore through 160 hectares of land, has sparked a critical investigation led by the WA Police Arson Squad.
The Impact of the Blaze
The fire, first reported on Sunday morning, raged through the northern suburbs of Geraldton, affecting areas from Spalding to Waggrakine, Moresby, Bluff Point, Sunset Beach, and Glenfield. It took the combined efforts of hundreds of firefighters, four water bombers, and two helitaks to battle the blaze, which persisted until Monday night.
As residents returned home, some after 48 hours of uncertainty, the focus shifted to the cause of this devastating event.
Unraveling the Mystery
The origin point of the fire has been identified in bushland bordering a residential street in Spalding. On Monday, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) announced that early indications pointed to the fire being deliberately lit.
DFES incident controller Brent Allen confirmed that the fire was being treated as suspicious, with Strike Force Vulcan deployed to the scene.
"At this stage, we have investigators from both DFES and the police arson squad working together to determine the cause," Allen explained. "While the cause is undetermined, we are actively pursuing all leads."
Allen emphasized the commitment of police to using every available resource to get to the bottom of this incident.
"It's crucial that we stamp out any potential arson activity early in the fire season. While there is no concrete evidence yet to suggest deliberate ignition, the police are leaving no stone unturned in their investigation."
The police are offering a substantial $25,000 reward for any information that leads to a conviction, reflecting the seriousness with which they are treating this case.

Despite the fatigue of the firefighting crews, their spirits were lifted by the overwhelming support from the Geraldton community.
"The level of support and outreach from the community has been extraordinary," Allen said. "It's a testament to the resilience and compassion of this town."
Mayor Jerry Clune of the City of Greater Geraldton echoed these sentiments, expressing gratitude for the firefighters who traveled from near and far to battle the blaze.
"The community is eager for answers, especially given the suggestion that the fire may have been deliberately started. It's understandable that this has caused anger and frustration among some residents."
Clune urged the community to remain calm and allow the police to conduct a thorough investigation.
"This fire has brought out the best in our community. As a former firefighter myself, I've seen firsthand how people come together in times of crisis. It's heartwarming to see everyone pitching in to support those affected."
A community fundraiser has been organized for Friday, with all donations going towards supporting those who lost their homes and other affected individuals.
