Tanzania's Cooking Gas Crisis: Unscrupulous Dealers Hike Prices, Leaving Residents in Turmoil
In a shocking revelation, residents of Dar es Salaam are facing a sudden surge in cooking gas prices, with some dealers taking advantage of election chaos to exploit consumers.
A recent survey by The Citizen exposed the alarming trend, showing that the price of a 15kg LPG cylinder has skyrocketed to Sh60,000 in Goba, while in Toangoma and Mbezi Luis, it's risen to Sh58,000. Even a 6kg cylinder now costs Sh25,000, leaving many households struggling to afford this essential commodity.
But here's where it gets controversial: Oryx Gas, a leading supplier, claims they haven't adjusted their prices. A company official anonymously stated that some dealers might be exploiting the recent unrest to profit from consumers. This raises the question: are these price hikes justified, or is it a case of opportunism?
The impact is devastating for residents. Ms. Halima Juma, a Goba resident, expressed her frustration, saying the sudden increase has left families scrambling to adjust their budgets. Many are forced to revert to charcoal and firewood, despite the government's push for cleaner energy. This could potentially undo environmental conservation efforts and increase deforestation.
The situation is dire for small businesses, too. Sharon Aweso, a food vendor from Mbezi Luis, shared her concern about the squeeze on profits due to higher gas prices, which may lead to increased food costs. She urges authorities to ensure fair pricing and transparency to protect Tanzanians from further financial strain.
Interestingly, LPG imports have risen by 38% in the 2023/24 financial year, thanks to campaigns promoting clean energy. Oryx Gas dominates the market with a 35.2% share. However, the Tanzania LPG Association's Executive Director, Amos Jackson, stated that price regulation is still a work in progress, and EWURA (Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority) is aware of the need for fair pricing.
The authorities are keeping a close eye on the market, but with LPG prices influenced by global fuel trends, the situation remains complex. Are these price hikes a temporary consequence of recent events, or is there a deeper issue at play?
What do you think? Is this a fair market response, or should authorities take stronger action to protect consumers? Share your thoughts below, and let's spark a discussion on this pressing issue.
